Johann von Aldringen werd op 10 december 1588 geboren in Luxemburg-stad, als telg in een familie die oorspronkelijk afkomstig was uit Aldringen, bij St. Vith, die redelijk welvarend was dankzij een groothandel in levensmiddelen.
Tijdens de 30-jarige oorlog, waarin de katholieke Spanjaarden tegen de protestantse Fransen vochten, was hij als veldheer in dienst van de Katholieke Liga. Zijn militaire carrière nam een hoge vlucht toen hij in 1630, samen met zijn vriend Matthias Gallas, in Mantua een grote overwinning op de Franse troepen behaalde. De plunderingen die daarop in de stad volgden, leverde hem de bibliotheek van de hertog van Mantua én de titel "rijksgraaf" op.
Tijdens een van de vele veldslagen die hij, inmiddels benoemd tot veldmaarschalk, leidde, raakte hij zwaar gewond en verdronk hij in de rivier de Isar. Dat was op 22 juni 1634 in Landshut.
Hoewel sommige historici denken dat hij in Thionville (F) geboren is, zijn de Luxemburgers er zeker van dat hij toch echt een Luxemburger was. De plaquette aan zijn geboortehuis in het stadsdeel Grund hangt daar dan naar hun mening ook volkomen terecht.
Johann von Aldringen was born on December 10, 1588 in Luxembourg-city, as the son of a family, originally from Aldringen, in the neighbourhood of St. Vith, which was reasonably well-to-do, thanks to the ownership of a wholesale business in food.
During the 30 Years' War, in which the catholic Spaniards fought the protestant French, he was an officer in the service of the Catholic Liga. His military career skyrocketed when, in 1630, together with his friend Matthials Gallas, beat the French in Mantua. The plundering of the city left him with the library of the Duke of Mantua and also with the titel of Count.
During one of the many combats he lead as field-marshal, he was severely injured and drowned in the Isar, on June 22, 1634, in Landshut.
Although some historics believe he was born in Thionville (F), the Luxembourgish are convinced he really is a Luxembourger. They are sure the plaque at his birth house in the quarter of Grund was placed with good reason.
