Nicolas - meestal Nik genoemd - Welter werd op 2 januari 1871 geboren in Mersch. Hij was schrijver en politicus. Een van zijn grote verdiensten was het schrijven van de Luxemburgse tekst van het Wilhelmus.
"Ons" Wilhelmus is in Luxemburg niet het volkslied, maar wel de hymne van de groothertogelijke familie. Het wordt gespeeld als iemand van de familie bij een ceremonie binnenkomt of vertrekt.
De oorspronkelijke melodie stamt waarschijnlijk uit de 16e eeuw.
Welter schreef de tekst in 1919, ter vervanging van de tekst van Willy Goergen (geboren in Steinsel op 30.04.1867, gestorven in Luxemburg-stad op 06.06.1942) uit 1915. Aanleiding voor de nieuwe tekst was het huwelijk van groothertogin Charlotte met Félix de Bourbon-Parma op 6 november 1919.
Welter stierf op 13 juli 1951 in Luxemburg-stad.
Nicolas - mostly called Nik - Welter was born on January 2, 1871 in Mersch. He was a writer and a politician. One of his most important merits was the writing of the Luxembourgish lyrics to the Wilhelmus.
In Luxembourg, the Wilhelmis is not, like in The Netherlands, the national anthem, but the grand ducal anthem. It is played when a member of the family enters or leaves during a ceremony.
The traditional melody was probably composed in the 16th century. Welter wrote the lyrics in 1919, to replace the text by Willy Goergen (born in Steinsel, 30.04.1867 and deceased in Luxembourg-City, 06.06.1942) in 1915. The reason for the new lyrics was the wedding of Grand Duchess Charlotte and Félix de Bourbon-Parma on November 6, 1919.
Welter died on July 13, 1951 in Luxembourg-city.
