Luxemburg heeft twee officiële vlaggen. De originele vlag - de staatsvlag en oorlogsvlag - lijkt sterk op die van Nederland. Drie horizontale banen in rood-wit-blauw. Kleuren die zijn gebaseerd op het Luxemburgse wapen: de rode leeuw (roude Léiw) - het nationale symbool - op een achtergrond van witte en blauwe banen.
Gelukkig is het blauw van de Luxemburgse vlag anders dan dat van de Nederlandse. Waar het Nederlandse kobaltblauw pantonekleur PMS286 is, gebruikt Luxemburg het lichtere PMS299.
Hij werd voor het eerst gebruikt in 1845, werd in 1848 voor het eerst beschreven maar werd pas op 23 juni 1972 wettelijk vastgesteld.
En dan is er nog de Luxemburgse handelsvlag. Die toont de rode leeuw op een achtergrond van witte en blauwe banen, precies zoals het nationale wapen.
In 2007 diende Kamerlid Michel Wolter een wetsvoorstel in om voortaan de handelsvlag als nationale vlag in te voeren. Hoewel het voorstel door 80% van de bevolking werd gesteund, werd het door het parlement van tafel geveegd. Zoals Juncker destijds zei: "zolang ik premier ben, komt er géén nieuwe vlag!"
Maar inmiddels is Juncker geen premier meer, dus wie weet komt die nieuwe vlag - buitengewoon populair bij de Luxemburgers - er toch nog...

And then there is the Luxembourgish civil ensign. It shows the red lion on a background of white and blue stripes, exactly like the national coat of arms.
In 2007, MP Michel Wolter introduced a legislative proposition to replace the national flag by the civil ensign. Although the proposition was supported by 80% of the Luxembourgish population, it was rejected by the parliament. To quote Juncker: "as long as I am prime-minister, there will be no new flag!"
But presently Juncker is no longer the prime-minister, so may be the new flag - extremely popular with the Luxembourgers - will arrive after all...
