Wat valt er te vertellen over een superdeluxe kantoorgebouw in Luxemburg-stad? Tja, eigenlijk niets... Maar op de plek waar nu het gebouw "Pole Nord" staat, stond vroeger hotel Brosius. En daar was bijna de moderne geschiedenis van Luxemburg volkomen veranderd.
In hotel Brosius vergaderde op 10 november 1918 de "Aarbechter- a Bauererot" (Arbeiders- en Boerenraad - hoewel er niet één boer deel van uitmaakte).
Er was groeiende ontevredenheid over groothertogin Marie-Adelheid, vanwege haar Duitsgezindheid en haar bemoeienis met regeringszaken. Daarom wilde de raad haar afzetten en van Luxemburg een republiek maken - en meteen nog wat andere zaken regelen, zoals een achturige werkdag en deelname van de staat in grote bedrijven en de spoorwegen.
Ze legden hun eisen voor aan de regering en er kwam een compromis: Marie-Adelheid trad (gedwongen) af en Charlotte werd groothertogin. Daarmee ging de raad akkoord, zodat Luxemburg toch een groothertogdom is gebleven.
What can you tell about a luxurious office building in Luxembourg-city. Well, nothing, actually. But on the spot where you now find the offices of "Pole Nord", there used to be hotel Brosius. And there the modern history of Luxemburg was almost completely altered.
In hotel Brosius, the "Aarbechter- a Bauererot" (Council of Workmen and Farmers - although not even one farmer was a member) had a meeting on November 10, 1918.
They were more and more discontented with Grand-Duchess Marie-Adelheid, due to her pro-German attitude and her interference with government affairs. That's why the Council wanted to depose her and turn Luxembourg into a republic - and at the same time they wanted some other changes, like the introduction of the eight hourly working day and participation of the government with large enterprises and the railway company.
They presented their demands to the government, and it ended in a compromise. Marie-Adelheid was forced to resign and Charlotte became the new Grand-Duchess. The Council agreed to that, so Luxembourg stayed a Grand Duchy after all.
