Volgens deskundigen is de "Bredewee" - tegenwoordig "Rue Large" - de oudste straat van Luxemburg-stad. En het huis op nummer 5, dat bekend staat als "Maison de Cassal" zou het oudste huis zijn.
De familie De Cassal was oorspronkelijk afkomstig uit Durbuy in België. Aanvankelijk werd gedacht dat het huis was gebouw voor Matthieu de Cassal, die van 1573 tot 1576 griffier was bij de "Conseil Provencial". Maar architecten denken dat het huis ouder is.
Na 1794 kwam het huis in bezit van een zekere Jean Storck. Een latere eigenaar was de familie Reuter. Die verkocht het in 1920 aan de Luxemburgse staat, die er eerst een crèche in onderbracht en vervolgens de bibliotheken van de historische en de linguïstische afdeling van het Institut Grand-Ducal.Tegenwoordig is er een mediabedrijf in het huis gevestigd.
Experts believe the "Bredewee" - nowadays the "Rue Large" - is the oldest street in Luxembourg-city. And the house at number 5, known as "Maison de Cassal" is probably the oldest house in the city.
The De Cassal family was origininally from Durbuy in Belgiuml. At first it was thought the house was built for Matthieu de Cassal, who was clerk of the "Conseil Provencial" from 1573 till 1576. But archtitects now believe the house was built earlier than that.
After 1794 the house came into the possession of a certain Jean Storck. Later on it was owned by the Reuter family. They sold it to the Luxembourgish state in 1920, who housed a day-nursery in it, and later on the libraries of the historical and the linguistic departments of the Institut Grand-Ducal. Nowadays there is a media company in the building.
