In de vallei van de Eisch, ten zuiden van Mersch, groeien dichte, donkere bossen op rotsachtige hellingen. En midden in dat ongerepte, ruige landschap ligt de Hunnebur. Een plek waar water uit de rotsen stroomt. Het regenwater dat hoog boven de vallei op de zandsteen valt, dringt langzaam door de rotsen en komt beneden door ingesleten spleten naar buiten. Een wonderlijk gezicht.
Volgens de overlevering dankt deze plek zijn naam aan het feit dat de troepen van Attila de Hun hier tijdens hun veroveringstochten door Europa in de vijfde eeuw hun paarden lieten drinken.
En bestaan meer verhalen over de Hunnebur. Zo zou een kluizenaar die hier in de buurt woonde mensen genezen hebben dankzij het geneeskrachtige water uit de rotsen.
Maar wat daar ook van waar mag zijn - het is gewoon een schitterende plek, waar je ook heerlijk kunt picknicken...
In the valley of the Eisch, south of Mersch, you find dense, dark woords on rocky slopes. And in the middle of that wild and rugged landscape lies the Hunnebur. An oasis where water wells up from the rocks. The rain that falls on the sandy stone, high above the valley, is filtered by the rocks and comes out below through clefts and cracks. It's a curious sight.
According to tradition, this spot is called "Hunnebur" because the troops of Attila the Hun .. their horses here, during their plundering tours through Europe in the 5th century.
And there are more stories around the Hunnebur. There was, for example, a hermit living nearby who cured sick people thanks to the healing powers of the water from the rocks.
Whether or not any of that is true - it is just a beautiful spot for a wonderful picknick...
