Opgravingen hebben aangetoond dat er al in de achtste eeuw v. Chr. een nederzetting was in het huidige Mersch. En de eerste kerk voor St. Michael werd in de zevende eeuw AD gebouwd.
De toren die er nu nog steeds staat, dateert uit 1707 en is in barokstijl gebouwd. Toen de kerk rond 1855 werd afgebroken, bleef de toren op verzoek van Anna Pawlowna, koningin der Nederlanden en Groot-Hertogin van Luxemburg, gespaard.
Op het plein voor de toren, staat sinds 1994 een fontein in de vorm van de draak waartegen St. Michael volgens de overlevering streed. Het beeld bevat talrijke symbolen die verwijzen naar de geschiedenis en de omgeving van Mersch.
Acheological findings show that there was already a settlement on the location of Mersch in the 8th century BC. And the first church dedicated to St. Michael was built in the seventh century AD.
The present tower dates back to 1707 and was built in baroque style. When the church was demolished in 1855, the tower was spare at the request of Anna Pawlowna, Queen of the Netherlands and Grand-Duchess of Luxembourg.
At the square next to the tower you can find a fountain in the shape of the dragon that St. Michael killed, so the stories tell. The statue has many symoblic details, referring to the history of Mersch and surroundings.
