Zwarte Madonna

De Johanneskerk - ook wel "Sint Johann auf dem Stein" genoemd - staat naast de Neumünster Abdij in Luxemburg-Grund. Al in 1309 stond hier een kerk, maar het huidige gebouw werd tussen 1688 en 1705 gebouwd.

Een van de bijzonderste beelden in de kerk, is dat van de Zwarte Madonna. Het stamt uit de 14e eeuw en is afkomstig uit de Parler-school in Keulen.
Hoewel vroeger werd gedacht dat de donkere kleur van dergelijke beelden werd veroorzaak door ouderdom of door de houtsoort, gaat men er tegenwoordig van uit dat het een bewuste keuze van de kunstenaars was, die verband houd met een tekst uit het Hooglied: "Ik ben zwart, maar lieflijk." (Hooglied 1, vers 5). Die tekst slaat op de Koningin van Sheba, de bruid van Salomo.

Er bestaan ongeveer 400 tot 500 Zwarte Madonna's in Europa.

Black Madonna
St. John's Church - also called "St. John on the Stone" - is next to the Neumünster Abbey in Luxembourg-Grund. There was a church on this spot as early as 1309, but the present one was built between 1688 and 1705.

One of the most remarkable statues in the church, is the Black Madonna. It dates back to the 14th century and was found in the Parler-school in Cologne.
For a long time people thought the dark colour of this kind of statues was due to aging or to the wood they were made of. But nowadays it is assumed that it was a delibarate choice of the artists, based on a verse of Song of Solomon: "I am black, but lovely." (Song of Solomon 1, verse 5). The quote refers to the Queen of Sheba, Solomon's bride.

There are about 400-500 Black Madonnas in Europe.
