The Hunnebur
In the valley of the Eisch, south of Mersch, you find dense, dark woords on rocky slopes. And in the middle of that wild and rugged landscape lies the Hunnebur. An oasis where water wells up from the rocks. The rain that falls on the sandy stone, high above the valley, is filtered by the rocks and comes out below through clefts and cracks. It's a curious sight.
According to tradition, this spot is called "Hunnebur" because the troops of Attila the Hun .. their horses here, during their plundering tours through Europe in the 5th century.
And there are more stories around the Hunnebur. There was, for example, a hermit living nearby who cured sick people thanks to the healing powers of the water from the rocks.
Whether or not any of that is true - it is just a beautiful spot for a wonderful picknick...

St. Michel
St. Michel
Only a few churches have been stricken by fate as much as St. Michel in Luxembourg-city.
There was already a chapel near the Fishmarket in the 10th century, built by order of Siegfried, the first Count of Luxembourg. It was renovated and expanded in the 14th century. But in 1509 the building went up in flames. A new church was built, which was destroyed by the Spanish army in 1543. And the church that replaced it, was lost at the end of the 17th century, due to fires and bombardments by French troops.
The present church dates back to the 18th century. The interior is decorated with ornament that come from various other churches that have dissapeared for different reasons.

Alzette
Alzette
The Alzette is considered to be the national river of Luxembourg. The inhabitants are so proud of the river, which flows over 70 kilometers from south to north through the country, that it's name is mentioned in the national anthem.
Nevertheless, since 1910 the Alzette is hidden over a lenght of more than 700 meter. When the steel production became more and more important and many immigrants - especially from Italy - came to the south of the country, the need of space for new houses grew. To adress that need, the river was covered in Esch-sur-Alzette to create new streets. Just outside the city border, the Alzette dissapears under ground to surface again near the garden of the former Berwart castle.

Stausee
Stausee
In the middle of the the Upper Sauer Nature Park, almost a mile west of Esch-sur-Sûre, lies the "Stausee" (water reservoir) - official called the "Lac de la Haute Sûre.
The dam in the river was built in the 1960's to assure the drinkwater supply for Luxemburg. The main dam is 48 meters high. The wall is 4,5 meters thick at the bottom and 1,5 meters at the top. The total surface of the lake is 380 hectares and it has a capacity of 59 million cubic meters. At some places it is 43 meters deep.
Speedboats are not allowed. Thanks to that fact, the lake - with the exception of the protected area between Esch and Lultzhausen - is a popular attraction for sailers, surfers, divers and swimmers. A few small but beautiful situated beaches makes it even more attractive - and so do the trips by solar-powered boat from Insenborn.

Mr. Hublot
Luxemburg jubelt.
Mr. Hublot
Luxembourg is cheering. For the first time in history a Luxembourgish movie has won an Oscar. "Mr. Hublot" was awarded the prestigeous prize in the categorie "short animated movies".
However, the joy is not undisputed. France claims the Oscar as well. "Mr. Hublot" is, after all, a Luxembourgish/French co-production. And even Belgium joins the battle, because the main character in the movie was created by the Belgium artist Stéphane Halleux.
But to Luxembourg the situation is clear. This is "our" Oscar. Zeilt Productions from Mondercange is the main producer (73%), Laurent Witz wrote the script and was the director, while Alexandre Espigare was "just" the co-director. And so the golden statue will go down in history as the first Luxembourgish Oscar ever.

Drielandenpunt (2)
Tripoint (2)
The second tripoint, in the south-west of the country, just outside the town of Rodange. Or actually almost the tripoint. The final 500 metres can only be travelled by a highway. That's dangerous and therefore forbidden territory for hikers. The garden of a friendly lady was the closest location. And a small orchard looks a lot nicer in a picture than a highway, of course.
Behind the orchard lies the railway, which forms the Belgian border. A little bit to the left it meets the French border. But a hike along the tracks isn't really safe neither...
