In een rustige wijk van Luxemburg-stad, achter het station, staat het geboortehuis van alweer een Luxemburger waar het land trots op is. Ook al was er weinig Luxemburgs meer aan op het moment dat hij beroemd werd.
Gabriel Jonas Ferdinand Lippmann werd op 16 augustus 1845 in dit huis geboren. Maar al drie jaar later verhuisde hij met zijn ouders naar Parijs, waar hij er niet in slaagde zijn onderwijzersdiploma te halen, maar wel een natuurkunde studie succesvol afsloot. Na een verdere studie in Heidelberg, werd hij in 1878 professor aan de Sorbonne.
Zijn specialiteiten waren elektriciteit en fotografie. In 1886 ontwikkelde hij een theorie voor het maken van kleurenfoto's, die hij in 1893 voor het eerst met succes toepaste. Dankzij dit "Lippmannproces" werd hij in 1909 de eerste Luxemburger die een Nobelprijs kreeg.
De plaquette aan zijn geboortehuis werd in 1942 door de nazi's verwijderd vanwege zijn Joodse afkomst. In 1984 is een nieuwe plaquette aangebracht.
Lippmann stierf aan boord van een schip op de Atlantische Oceaan, op de terugreis van een bezoek aan Amerika, op 13 juli 1921.
In a quiet neighbourhood of Luxembourg-city, at the backside of the railwaystation, you can find the house of birth of yet another Luxembourger the country is proud of. Although his Luxembourg past was far behind him when he became famous.
Gabriel Jonas Ferdinand Lippmann was born in this house on August 16, 1845. But he moved to Paris with his parents at the early age of three. He failed the examination to become a teacher, but successfully ended a study of phyics. After further education in Heidelberg, Germany, he became professor at the Sorbonne in 1878.
He specialized in electricity and photography. In 1886 he developed a theory for the production of full colour pictures, which he successfully put to practice in 1893. Thanks to this "Lippmannprocess" he became the first Luxembourgish Nobel laureate in 1909.
The plaque at his house of birth was removed by the nazis in 1942, because of his Jewish ancestry. The new plaque was placed in 1984.
Lippmann died aboard a ship on the Atlantic Ocean, returning home after a visit to the USA, on July 13, 1921.
