De blannen Theis

Rond de persoon van "de blannen Theis" (de blinde Theis) bestaat volop verwarring. Er zijn mensen die geloven dat er nooit een blinde Theis heeft bestaan. En desondanks staat er een standbeeld van hem in Grevenmacher.

Volgens de overlevering werd Matthias Schau op 30 maart 1747 in deze plaats geboren. De blinde zanger en violist trok met zijn hond rond door Luxemburg om op kermissen, jaarmarkten en volksfeesten met zijn zelfgemaakte liederen in zijn levensonderhoud te voorzien. Hij stierf in Luxemburg-Eich op 18 oktober 1824.

Maar daarmee houdt het verhaal nog niet op. Want rond 1760 werd, ook in Grevenmacher, een zeker Matthias Gelhausen geboren, die precies hetzelfde deed als zijn naamgenoot. En er zijn dan ook heel wat mensen die denken dat híj "de blannen Theis" is geweest.

En om dat alles nog ingewikkelder te maken, had de tweede Matthias een familielid - Johann Gelhausen, 17.04.1811 - 25.11.1874) die ook blind was en als muzikant door het land reisde. Hij werd "de blannen Pully" genoemd.

De blannen Theis
There is a lot of confusion about "de blannen Theis" (the blind Theis). Some people don't believe he ever existed. But then there is his statue in Grevenmacher.

According to tradition, Matthias Schau was born in this town on March 30, 1747. The blind singer and violinist travelled through Luxembourg with his dog, earning a living by singing his compositions at funfairs, festivals and parties. He died in Luxembourg-Eich on October 18, 1824.

But that is not the end of the story. Because around 1760 a certain Matthias Gelhausen was born in Grevenmacher as well. And he did exactly the same as the other Matthias. Many people believe he was the true "blannen Theis".

And to makes things even more complicated, a family member of the second Matthias - Johann Gelhausen, 17.04.1811 - 25.11-1874), was blind as well and travelled around as a singer and musician. He was called "de blannen Pully".

So actually this is a "guess-who-statue"...
