Het grootste stadion van Luxemburg heette oorspronkelijk het "Neie Stadion". Met zijn 9000 zitplaatsen is het voor Europese begrippen te klein voor Europese wedstrijden, maar toch wordt het - bij gebrek aan beter - af en toe voor gebruikt voor internationale wedstrijden van het Luxemburgse nationale team. Overigens blijft het daarbij vrijwel altijd bij kwalificatiewedstrijden, want verder schoppen de Luxemburgers het nauwelijks.
Sinds 1993 heet het "Stade Josy Barthel", als eerbetoon aan de enige Luxemburgse atleet die ooit een gouden medaille won op de Olympische Spelen.
Josy Barthel werd op 24 april 1927 geboren in Mamer. Drie keer deed hij mee aan de Olympische Spelen, op het onderdeel atletiek. In 1952 won in Helsinki goud op de 1500 meter, na een fenomenale eindsprint, in een tijd van 3.45,28.
Na zijn sportcarrière ging hij de politiek in en van 1977 tot 1984 was hij minister van Verkeer, Toerisme en Milieu.
Hij stierf op 7 juli 1992 in Luxemburg-stad.
Luxembourg's largest soccer stadium was originally called 'Neie Stadion'. With its 9000 seats it is officially too small for European matches, but nevertheless it is occasionnaly used for international matches of the Luxembourg national team. Usually just for qualification matches, because that's where it almost always ends for the Luxembourgers.
Sinds 1993 it is called "Stade Josy Barthel" to honour Luxembourg's only athlete who won a gold medal at the Olympics.
Josy Barthel was born in Mamer onb April 24, 1927. He entered the Olympic Games three times. At the Olympics in Helsinki, 1952, he won the 1500m, after a stunning strong finish; the winning time was 3.45,28.
After his athletics career, Barthel became a politician. From 1977 until 1984 he was Minister of Traffic, Tourism and Environment.
He died on July 7, 1992, in Luxembourg-City.
