In de grootste winkelstraat van Grevenmacher vertelt een kleine plaquette in een gevel dat daar Frantz Seimetz geboren is.
Frantz Seimetz is een van de Luxemburgse 'oude meesters'. Hij werd geboren op 21 april 1858 en werkte aanvankelijk als huisschilder. Totdat de grootindustrieel Antoine Pescatore zijn talent ontdekte en hem in staat stelde een opleiding te volgen aan de kunstacademies van Brussel, München en Parijs. Na zijn terugkeer in Luxemburg schilderde hij vooral landschappen, met name rond Echternach en het Müllerthal. Zijn stijl zwierf een beetje tussen realistisch en romantisch, met een vleugje impressionisme. Ook schilderde hij veel portretten, bij voorkeur van excentrieke figuren.
De mens Seimetz was al net zo veelzijdig als zijn schilderstijl. Hij was een vrolijke en flamboyante man, met een grote voorliefde voor reizen. Hij bezocht onder meer Amerika, Canada, West-Indië en Mexico.
In 1932 maakte hij zijn laatste schilderij, waarna hij zich op het schrijven stortte. Hij schreef vooral anekdotes en jeugdherinneringen, in het Duits, het Luxemburgs en het dialect van de Moezelstreek.
Hij stierf op 26 oktober 1934 in Luxemburg-stad.
In the most important shopping street of Grevenmacher, a small plaque tells us it is the birthplace of Frantz Steimetz.
Frantz Seimetz was one of Luxembourg's 'old masters'. He was born on April 21, 1858 and started his career as a house painter, until the industrialist Antoine Pescatore noticed his artistic talents and enabled him to follow art classes at the academies of Brussels, Munich and Paris. After his return to Luxemburg he painted many landscapes, mainly around Echternach en the Mullterthal. His paintings are a mix of realistic, romantic and impressionistic styles. He has also painted a lot of portraits, especcially of exotic figures.
Seimetz himself was just as divers as his paintings. He was an optimistic and Bohemioan man, who loved to travel. He visited the United States, Canada, the West Indies and Mexico.
In 1932, Seimetz made his last painting and devoted himself to writing. He published mainly anecdotes en tales of his childhood, in German, Luxembourgish and in the Moselle dialect.
He died on Octobre 26, 1934, in Luxembourg-city.
