Richard D. Brookins

Dat er in Wiltz een gedenksteen is geplaatst voor de Amerikaanse soldaat Richard D. Brookins, komt niet doordat hij grote heldendaden heeft verricht of eervol is gesneuveld in een nobele strijd.

Als 22-jarige soldaat deed Brookins dienst in het 112e regiment van de 28e infanteriedivisie van de Pennsylvania National Guard (ook wel de "Keystone Division" genoemd), dat tijdens het Ardennenoffensief in 1944 zijn kampen had opgeslagen in Wiltz. Die stad was een van de centra van het Luxemburgse verzet en had zwaar geleden onder harde represailles van de Duitsers. Er was jarenlang gebrek aan alles geweest, en vooral het lot van de kinderen ging de Amerikanen aan het hart.
Een van de soldaten, korporaal Harry Stutz, wilde iets voor de kinderen doen. Hij stelde voor een sinterklaasmiddag te organiseren, met cadeautjes en lekkers. En hij haalde Richard Brookins over om als de goedheiligman het feest op te luisteren. En zo kwam, op 5 december 1944, voor het eerst na vijf jaar oorlog, Sint Nicolaas weer naar Wiltz - en nog wel een Amerikaanse Sint.

Maar daarmee is het verhaal nog niet afgelopen. In 1977, toen Wiltz zich opmaakte voor de viering van 30 jaar vrijheid en wederopbouw, wist een van de organisatoren Richard Brookins in Amerika op te sporen. Op de uitnodiging om in dat feestjaar opnieuw als Sinterklaas zijn opwachting te maken, ging hij maar al te graag in. En ook na die tijd is hij nog diverse keren in december met mijter en staf naar Wiltz gekomen. In 2009, op zijn 87e, trad Brookins voor het laatst op als goedheiligman.

The reason for this memorial in Wiltz for the American soldier Richard D. Brookins has nothing to do with some sort of heroic action or a honourful death in a noble war.

At 22, Brookins served in the 112th regiment of the 28th infantry division of the Pennsylvania National Guard (known as the Keystone Division), which had a recovering camp established in Wiltz during the Ardennen Offensive in 1944. That city had been a centre of resistance and had surfered brutal reprisals by the Germans. There had been a lack of almost anything for years, and the Americans were especially touched by the fate of the children.
One of the soldiers, corporal Harry Stutz, wanted to do the children a favour an suggested to give them a Sint Nicolas party, with gifts and candy. He persuaded Richard Brookins to appear at the party as the good saint. And thus it occurred that,  after five years of war and suffering on the afternoon of December 5th, 1944, Saint Nicolas returned to Wiltz.

But that is not the end of the story. In 1977, when Wiltz prepared the celebration of 30 years of liberation and rebuilding, a member of the organisation committee managed to track down Richard Brookins in the USA. And with great enthousiasm he accepted the invitation to play the part of Saint Nicolas once again in that festive year. And after that, he has visited Wiltz more than once with his bishop's miter and his staff. In the year 2009 he performed as St. Nick for the last time.
