Abraham (eigenlijk Jean-Louis) Gilson werd op 8 oktober 1741 geboren in Habay-la-Vielle (B). Hij werkte als natuurtekenaar in een kluizenarij bij Biseux, tot hij in 1765 als lekenbroeder - Broeder Abraham - in het klooster van Orval de Benedictijner kunstschool te volgen. Vanwege zijn grote talent stelde de abt hem in staat verder te studeren aan de kunstacademies van Brussel, Antwerpen, Parijs en Düsseldorf en een stage te volgen in Italië. Na zijn terugkomst in Orval werd hij naar het Franse hof geroepen om portretten te schilderen van Lodewijk XVI en Marie-Antoinette. Weer terug in Orval maakte hij schilderingen voor de kloosterkerk.
Toen het klooster in 1793 door de Fransen werd verwoest, vluchtte broeder Abraham naar Luxemburg-stad, waar hij onderdak vond in de abdij van Neumünster. Als dank schonk hij de abdij tal van schilderijen. Zoals "de doop van Christus", dat nu in de St. Michaelskerk hangt. Ook maakte hij muurschilderingen in het huis van zijn vriend, de advocaat Merjeay (Rue du Nord 11, Haus Neumann.
Hij stierf of 16 januari 1809 in Florenville (B).

When the convent was destroyed by the French in 1793, Brother Abraham fled to Luxembourg-city, where he found shelter in the Neumünster Abbey. To show his appreciation, he donated many paintings to the abbey. One of them was "The baptism of Christ", which is nowadays in St. Michael's Church. He also made murals in the house of one of his friends, the lawyer Merjeay.
He died on January 16, 1809, in Florenville (B).
