Overal in het land staan ze. Spontaan opgerichte herinneringen. Vaak met nauwelijks nog te herkennen afbeeldingen of opschriften. Wegkruisen zijn al sinds het begin van onze jaartelling onderdeel van het Luxemburgse landschap. Eén van de bekendste makers ervan, was Mathias Schergen.
Mathias Schergen werd geboren in Niederanven, waar zijn ouders - afkomstig uit Tirol - zich gevestigd hadden. Hijzelf vestigde zich als steenhouwer/bouwer in Godbringen bij Junglinster. 's Zomers werkte hij als bouwmeester (o.a. in de vesting van Luxemburg-stad), 's winters maakte hij (op bestelling) stenen wegkruisen. Zijn bijnaam was dan ook "Kräisermaathes" en zijn huis werd "A Kräizen" genoemd. Hij maakte zijn kruisen van zachte, gele zandsteen. Er staan er tientallen in het hele land.
Hij stierf op 8 februari 1853.
You see them all over the country. Spontanuously erected memorials, with pictures and inscriptions that are often hardly recognizable. Wayside crosses heve been part of the Luxembourgish scenery since the beginning of our era. One of the most famous creators was Mathias Schergen.
Mathias Schergen was born in Niederanven, where his parents, originally from Tyrol, had settled down. He started a career as a stonemason in Godbringen, near Junglinster. In the summer months he worked as a builder (for some years at the fortress of Luxembourg-city), in winter he created wayside crosses on order. His nickname was "Kräisermaathes" and his house was called "A Kräizen". He made his crosses out of soft, yellow sandstone. There are a number of them left all over Luxembourg.
He died on February 8, 1853.
