Op 1 oktober 1603 werd in Luxemburg-stad het Jezuïetencollege - "De Kolléisch" - gevestigd, nadat de gouverneur-generaal daarvoor op 8 augustus 1594 toestemming had gegeven.
Toen op 21 juli 1773 Paus Clément XIV de Jezuïetenorde had ophief, verdween ook het college.
De sluiting van het college was een besluit van Maria-Théresia, die het onderwijsstelsel wilde herzien. Het instituut bleef bestaan als staatscollege, onder de naam "Collège Royal". Tijdens de Franse bezetting (van 1795 tot 1817) was het gesloten, maar uiteindelijk bleef het tot 1830 bestaan. Daarna werd het het "Athénée Grand-Ducal" en verhuisde het naar een nieuw gebouw.
Het oude gebouw is nu de zetel van de nationale bibliotheek.

When Pope Clément XIV surpressed the Jesuit Order, on July 21, 1773, the school closed as well.
The closure of the school was part of the plan of Maria-Théresia to reorganise the school system. The institute became a state school, named the "Collège Royal!. During the French occupation (from 1795 till 1817) the college was closed temporarily, but after all it existed until 1830. After that it became the "Athenée Grand-Ducal" and moved tot a new building.
The original building nowadays houses the national library.
