Julien Vesque werd op 8 april 1848 geboren in Luxemburg-stad. Hij verhuisde in 1871 naar Parijs en studeerde daar botanica. Een jaar later ging hij aan het werk in het laboratorium van Joseph Decaisne en werd Frans staatsburger. Zijn indrukwekkende carrière sloot hij af als professor aan de Sorbonne.
Naast de botanica had ook de fysica zijn belangstelling. Hij combineerde beide interesses in het bestuderen van de waterhuishouding van planten en de rol van zouten bij het opnemen van water. Op basis van dat onderzoek maakte hij een systematische indeling van planten: "Epharmosis, sive materiae ad instruendam anatomiam systematis naturalis", drie delen, uitgegeven tussen 1889 en 1892.
Hij stierf op 25 juli 1895 in Parijs.
Zijn liefde voor de botanica gaf hij door aan zijn beide dochters, die naam maakten als illustratoren van veel wetenschappelijk boeken over planten en bloemen.
Julien Vesque was born on April 8, 1848 in Luxembourg-city. In 1871 he moved to Paris, to study botany. A year later he started working in the laboratory of Joseph Decaisne and took on the French nationality. He had an impressive career, which he ended as a professor at the Sorbonne University.
Besides botany, he was also interested in physiology. He combined both fields while studying the water transportation in plants and the role of salt for absorbing water. His research resulted in a systematic classification of plants: "Epharmosis, sive materiae ad instruendam anatomiam systematis naturalis", three volumes, published between 1889 and 1892.
He died on July 25, 1895 in Paris.
Both his daughters inherited his love for plants. They were well-known illustrators of a number of scientific books about plants and flowers.
