Goethe en Luxemburg

De naam Johann Wolfgang von Goethe - geboren op 28 augustus 1749 in Frankfurt, gestorven op 22 maart 1822 in Weimar - kennen we natuurlijk allemaal. Dat hij in 1792 twee keer een week in Luxemburg-stad doorbracht, is waarschijnlijk veel minder bekend.

Het succes van zijn eerste roman "Het lijden van de jonge Werther", verschenen in 1774, overdonderde Goethe volkomen. Om de fans die voortdurend op zijn stoep stonden te ontvluchten, reisde hij in 1786 naar Italië. Vervolgens nam hij, op verzoek van de hertog van Weimar, in 1792 deel aan de strijd tegen Frankrijk. Die "Campagne in Frankrijk", die hij later beschreef, bracht hem onder meer in de Luxemburgse hoofdstad.

In 1935 werd, vlakbij de Bockrots met de vesting, een gedenksteen geplaatst. Daarop een citaat van Goethes lovende woorden over Luxemburg: "Hier findet sich soviel Grösse mit Anmut, soviel Ernst mit Lieblichkeit verbunden, dass wohl zu wünschen wäre, Poussin hatte sien herrliches Talent in solchen Räumen betätigt." (Hier vind je zoveel grootsheid en charme, zoveel ernst vermengd met mildheid, dat je zou wensen dat Poussin (Frans schilder uit de 15e eeuw) zijn heerlijke talent in zo'n omgeving had uitgeoefend.)

Goethe and Luxembourg
Of course everybody knows the name of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, born on August 28, 1749 in Frankfurt, deceased in Weimar on March 22, 1822. Less known is the fact that he has payed two short visits to Luxembourg-city.

Goethe was overwhelmed by the succes of his first novel, "The sorrows of young Werther", published in 1774. To get away from the admirers who constantly jostled around his house, he traveled to Italy in 1786. After that, on request of the duke of Weimar, he joined the battle against the French in 1792. That "Campagne in France", which he later described, brought him to the Luxembourg capital twice.

In 1935 a memorial was placed near the Bock and the old fortress. It contains Goethe's praising words on Luxembourg: "Hier findet sich soviel Grösse mit Anmut, soviel Ernst mit Lieblichkeit verbunden, dass wohl zu wünschen wäre, Poussin hatte sien herrliches Talent in solchen Räumen betätigt." (There is so much grandeur and charm here, so much gravity mixed with gentleness, you wish Poussin (French painter in the 15th century) would have practiced his devine talents in such a scenery.)
