Le Grand Théâtre

Het is bijna vanzelfsprekend dat een klein land als Luxemburg nauwelijks een noemenswaardige filmindustrie kent. Pas sinds 1990 worden er films gemaakt, waarvan slechts een handjevol ook buiten de landsgrenzen bekend worden.
Maar het prachtige landschap maakt Luxemburg wél een populaire locatie voor de maken van films. Talrijke - ook min of meer bekende - buitenlandse films zijn geheel of gedeeltelijk opgenomen in het land. Zoals de BBC-productie 'The Servant' in 1994 en 'Shadow of a Vampire', met John Malkovich, die in 2000 deels in Vianden werd gedraaid. Voor "The Merchant of Venice", met Jeremy Irons en Al Pacino, werd in Esch-sur-Alzette een compleet toneel gebouwd.
Ook het "Grand Théâtre" in de hoofdstad op deze foto werd ooit als filmdecor gebruikt. In de grote foyer, met de prachtige marmeren vloer, de oogverblindende kroonluchters en de diamantvormige ramen werden opnamen gemaakt voor de misdaadkomedie "Flawless", met Michael Caine en Demi Moore. Volgens velen riep deze locatie de authentieke sfeer van een sjiek hotel in het Londen van de 60-er jaren perfect op.

It more or less speaks for itself that a small country like Luxembourg has hardly a worthwile cinema production. It was'n until 1990 that movies were made, and not many of them were noticed outside the borders.
But the wonderful scenery did and does make Luxembourg a popular location for shooting (parts of) movies. Numerous foreign movie scenes  - some of which with some sort of international reputation - were made in this country. The BBC-production "The Servant" (1984) for instance, and "Shadow of a Vampire", with John Malkovich, which was partly recorded in Vianden in the year 2000. For "The Merchant of Venice", with Jeremy Irons and Al Pacino, a complete stage was built in Esch-sur-Alzette.
The "Grand Théâtre" in the capital on this photo was also part of a movie set. In the giant lobby, with the marvelous marble floor, the dazzling chandeliers and diamond shaped windows, several scenes of the crime comedy "Flawless", with Michael Caine and Demi Moore, were shot. It was said this location created the perfect feel of a luxurious London hotel in the sixties.
