Perle Mesta

Net buiten het centrum van Luxemburg-stad liggen, gezellig op een kluitje, diverse buitenlandse ambassades. Ook die van Amerika, waar de olifantjes en ik een kijkje kwamen nemen.
Kijkjes nemen is daar geen probleem, maar zodra je een fototoestel tevoorschijn haalt, komen strenge beveiligers naar buiten gesneld en roepen dat het fotograferen van het gebouw een uiterst verdachte en absoluut verboden activiteit is.
Tot groot verdriet van de olifantjes, die nog wel zo'n interessant verhaal over een Amerikaanse ambassadrice hadden. Gelukkig leverde een uitgebreide zoektocht van drie stoere beveiligers een kant-en-klare foto van het gebouw op, zodat het verhaal toch verteld kan worden...

Van 1949 tot 1958 was de Amerikaanse diplomate Perle Mesta ambassadrice in Luxemburg. Ze werd beroemd door de buitenissige en bruisende feesten die ze - ook in dit land - organiseerde en waar de crème de la crème van de politiek en de 'high society' te gast was. Haar bijnaam was dan ook "the hostess with the mostest".
Haar extravagante levensstijl inspireerde Irving Berlin in 1949 tot de musical "Call me Madam", die in 1950 op Broadway in première ging. In zijn script is de hoofdpersoon ambassadrice in het fictieve Europese land "Lichtenburg".

 

Perle Mesta
Just outside the city centre of Luxembourg, a number of foreign ambasseys, cosy gathered together, are located. Among them the American ambassey, where once again I stumbled upon the little elephants.
Looking at the building is no problem, but as soon as you take out a camera, impressive security officers hurry outside to tell you taking pictures of the building is extremely suspicious and therefore strictly forbidden.
The elephants were really dissapointed, because they had a very interesting story to tell about one of the former American ambassadors. To their relief, a thourough search by three security officers produced a existing photograph of the building. So the story can be told after all...

The American diplomat Perle Mesta was USA-ambassador in Luxembourg from 1949 till 1958. She was famous for the lavish and sparkling parties she organised, both in the United States and in Luxembourg, where the absolute top of 'high society' was invited. It resulted in the nickname "the hostess with the mostest".
Her extravagance inspired Irving Berlin in 1949 to the musical "Call me Madam", which opened on Broadway in 1950.
In his script, the main character is ambassador in the fictional European country of "Lichtenburg".
