Lucilinburhuc

Op deze bescheiden plek in Luxemburg-stad is ooit Luxemburg ontstaan.
Siegfried van Lotharingen werd rond 920 geboren en stierf op 28 oktober 998. Van zijn vader Wigerik erfde hij niet alleen de titels "Graaf van de Moezelgouw en de Ardennengouw, voogd van de rijksabdij Sankt Maximin te Trier en van de Abdij van Echternach", maar ook diverse landgoederen in het toenmalige Opper-Lotharingen. Hij ruilde zijn grondstukken in Feulen, bij Ettelbruck, tegen een strategisch gelegen stuk land aan de Alzette. Op de hoge Bockrots liet hij in 963 een kasteel bouwen dat hij Lucilinburhuc ("Kleine Burg") noemde. Zo werd hij "Graaf Siegfried I van Lucilinburhuc", een naam die later geleidelijk veranderde in Luxemburg. De burcht groeide al snel uit tot een stad en later tot een heel land - zij het bescheiden van afmeting.

Siegfried of Lotharingia was born around the year 920 en died October 28, 998. He inherited not just the titles "Count of the Moselgau and the Ardennes, advocate of the  Abbeys of Treves and Echternach", but also several estates in former Upper-Lorraine. He traded his properties in Feulen, near Ettelbruck, for a strategically important estate near the Alzette. On the steep Bock he built a castle in 963 and called it Lucilinburhuc ("Little Fortress"). Since then he was called "Count Siegfried I of Lucilinburhuc". Gradually that name developed into Luxembourg. The castle rapidly grew into a city - the most important city of the small country of Luxembourg that developed around it.
